Hi there! My name is Nick Barton and here begins the start of my weekly blog. For starters I thought it'd be best to introduce myself. My name is Nick (you know that) and I am an English writer finding my place in the world stuffed full of writers and other wacky artists.
I've been meaning to start a blog for a long time and then I wondered "what the hell are you waiting for?" and there, everything made sense. The truth is, there isn't really anything out there that's going to make it easier for you, you can't wait for the cosmos to align and you damn well can't wait for somebody to make room for you, hand you a name tag and announce to the ballroom of artists who you are and why you're here. Just step into the world and make yourself known.
If that sounded corny and rotten then I'm sorry but I do believe it is the truth and why so many of us don't do what we really want to do.
Which brings me to a little history lesson about me (I'll keep it brief!). I left school not knowing what the hell to do and so I studied media in college and then university. Before uni was done I knew it wasn't for me. I wanted to be a writer, like I always had since school but I never really knew it then. Despite writing all of the time, I never took it that seriously and thought, 'no, my future lies in film-making or something in that world" but the voice in my head yelled, 'no! You are a writer and by golly you will write!'. To make it clear, I listen to the shouter a lot more than the other guy.
At present, on this crisp, frosty morning in small town England, I have a portfolio of short stories, novels, songs (I wanted to be a musician as well...) and a few screenplays bundled away and I can look at myself in a mirror, adjust a bow-tie and say 'I am a writer'. And I am.
So, here it begins. Every Tuesday I shall post a blog post about writing and reading. Some may be reviews on books I've read, how my writing's going, my tips (even though I always feel like an impostor when lending writing advice), sharing my favourite books and much more.
Books are a wonderful source of entertainment and for me no other source can send you headlong into another world the same way a book can.
So, sit down, snap on your restraints and take the fall.
